In the early
1990s, after CMCT ministry had been functioning for several years as a
registered society, we saw the Lord leading and giving us fresh visions
for opening up new ministries for the upliftment of the poor. As we
visited and worked in many slum areas we saw all around us many broken
lives. Many times our hearts were broken as we saw children who should
have been having education, idling in dirty mud streets, hair matted,
no proper food and no opportunity for education.
When we did
surveys in families, the cry of the parents was that they
could not afford to send their children to school. Our hearts were
broken as we saw the need. We prayed and asked God how we could help.
Without education there is no hope of a good future. Increasingly we
became aware that to lift a child out of poverty, and ultimately a
family, education was the only answer. As we prayed, the Lord gave us a
vision to start a school for these impoverished children. We had no
room, so we built a make-shift hall with bricks and a thatched roof. As
we made the school known, so many children started coming and after
some time, we were cramming more than 200 children in different
classes, all into this one hall, measuring approximately 25X40 ft.
We assessed our
values for the lives of these children. We employed
government-trained teachers, who taught them in all subjects. We saw
children coming to school in filthy rags full of holes, dirty, hair
matted, bulging stomachs because of worms and malnutrition – we look
solely to the Lord to provide for our needs.
With our limited resources, we started to make uniforms for the
children. We also bought text-books and exercise books. We then found
to our amazement that as soon as we provided a uniform to these
children, the parents suddenly developed a dignified attitude and
started sending their children neat and clean to the school. This
change came about just because of a little investment in a life, thus
changing a life from sadness into hope.
