The Haven Of Hope Handicraft Centre began in a very small way in 1976
with a few teenage girls making extremely simple embroidered items. Gradually
their learning increased and various churches and establishments in Chennai(Madras)
encouraged them by selling their work. This was followed by friends and supporters
overseas offering to help sell the handicraft. This was a great encouragement
to all who worked in The Haven of Hope and was the impetus to venture into a wider
variety of differing designs and styles. As support and in interest grew so also
the number of staff employed in the handicraft centre. Today there are almost
120 ladies making these delightful items. After nearly three decades this beautiful
and exquisite handwork is being sought not only in India but in a dozen other
countries of the world. New products and designs are constantly being introduced
as will be seen in this catalogue. In addition there are 4 earlier catalogues
which are available on demand. Most of the ladies who produce this work come from
greatly disadvantaged backgrounds. Many are the sole bread winners in large families.
